Details
Bold, outrageous, and shocking, Le cri des méduses, is a perfect fit for our new TITAS/UNFILTERED series. Alan Lake has created a work poised between fable and allegory. Le cri des méduses, a polymorphic choreographic work– enriched with visual art and video – reinforces Alan Lake’s status as a significant Canadian artist. Starting from Théodore Géricault’s painting, The Raft of the Medusa, Le cri des méduses both promises and delivers a startling artistic shock.
Alan Lake likes to describe his choreographic language as a hybrid, through which he has created his own singular world. “I explore the interconnections between the body, filmed images, sculptural installations and raw material”, he says. Inspired by Théodore Géricault’s famous painting The Raft of the Medusa, he puts forward a vision of humanity adrift. Intensely physical dance, like a pagan ritual, is heightened by the powerful imagery of the stage design. “I consider myself a symbolist”, says Lake. His interpretation transforms nightmares into allegories. Le cri des méduses is a waking dream, a dance of life and survival.
Such a surprising and stunning work, Le cri des méduses, is the definition of what TITAS/UNFILTERED was designed to celebrate!
“The piece skillfully conjures … the illusion that this scandalous event painted in The Raft of the Medusa is coming to life before our eyes.”
